Knotted Dinner Rolls Recipe:
Yield: 12 Servings
Cook Time: 2 Hrs
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ - 1 ¾ Cups Whole Wheat Flour
- 1/8 Cup Sugar
- ½ tsp Sea Salt
- 1 ¼ tsp Active Dry Yeast
- ¼ Cup Whole Milk or Soy Milk
- 2 oz Water, Room Temperature
- 1 Tbsp Butter or Earth Balance
- 1 Egg [For Dough]
- 1 Egg, Beaten Lightly + 1 Tbsp Water [For Egg Wash]
- Sesame Seeds or Poppy Seeds for Topping
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375° F.
2. Mix only 1 Cup of the flour, sugar, sea salt, and yeast in a mixing bowl.
3. Heat milk, water, and butter in a small sauce pot over the stove until butter melts. Transfer to a large bowl, add the egg to the liquid ingredients, and gradually add the dry ingredients to the liquid.
4. Add remaining ½ cup of flour and knead dough for 8-10 minutes by hand or 3-4 minutes using a mixer. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let rest in a warm area for 20 minutes.
5. Place dough on a cutting board and punch down to get any air bubbles out. Roll out into a rectangle (about 8 in x12 in). Cut into 12 strips as evenly as possible and roll them into ropes.
6. Take each rope and knot once. Place each knot on a parchment lined sheet tray, 3 inches apart. Brush each knot with the egg wash and sprinkle the seeds over each one immediately after brushing with the wash.
7. Proof the rolls for 10 minutes. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown, enjoy!
Tips/Tricks:
- Let the dough rest on top of the oven while it’s preheating for faster results!
- You can also knot these rolls twice if you roll the ropes 2-3 inches longer.
- These taste absolutely amazing warmed with some butter on the top!!
