Homemade Vanilla Extract

With the holidays right around the corner, I know that lots of you will be using vanilla extract in your baking endeavors! I absolutely feel like vanilla is overpriced at most supermarkets! I like to make my own in bulk to cut down on some of the priciness that comes with the oh-so-amazing vanilla bean! This recipe can take up to one month to make, so it's best to get a head start now if you can, I hope you enjoy :)

Homemade Vanilla Extract Recipe:

Yield: ~ 1 Cup or 8 oz

Cook Time: 5 Min

Ingredients:

- 3 Vanilla Bean Pods

- 1 Cup Rum, Brandy, Vodka, or Bourbon

- Glass Jar or Bottle w/ Lid

Directions:

1. First, take each vanilla bean pod and cut it in half, lengthwise, using a small paring knife.

2. Next, place each bean in a glass container with your liquor of choice.

3. Place lid on tightly. Shake bottle every 2-3 days for up to a month for the vanilla beans to infuse properly. The longer the vanilla infuses for, the more flavor your vanilla extract will have.

Tips/Tricks:

- Using a darker liquor, like brandy or rum will yield a much darker vanilla than if you use vodka or another light-colored alcohol.

- You can use two vanilla beans instead of three, however the vanilla extract will either not be as flavorful, or you can infuse it for a longer period of time for the same effect to happen.
