Apple Crisp w/ Roasted Apples

This dessert just might become your next go-to! It's simple, delicious, and seriously satisfying!

The pie crust topping is the best part and makes the entire dessert come together, I promise this one is worth a try, I hope you all enjoy :)

Apple Crisp w/ Roasted Apples:

Yield: 6 Servings

Cook Time: 50 Min

Ingredients:

- 5 Cups Honeycrisp or Red Delicious, Sliced (About 5-6 Apples)

- ½ Cup Granulated Sugar or Sugar In The Raw

- 1 Tbsp Whole Wheat Flour

- 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon

- ¼ Cup Water

- 2/3 Cup Old Fashioned Rolled Oats

- ½ Cup Whole Wheat Flour

- ½ Cup Brown Sugar or Coconut Sugar, Packed

- 1/8 tsp Baking Powder

- 1/8 tsp Baking Soda

- ¼ Cup Butter or Earth Balance, Melted

- Top Crust Ingredients:

o ¾ Cup Whole Wheat Flour

o ½ Cup Butter, Earth Balance, or Vegetable Shortening

o ¼ Cup Ice Water

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Gather all ingredients. Wash and dry apples.

2. Prepare top crust (if using) by combining the ¾ cup whole wheat flour, ½ cup butter, and ¼ cup ice water together and kneading until a dough forms. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and freeze while you prepare everything else.

3. Next, slice apples about ¼ inch thick, set aside. In a large bowl, add sugar, 1 Tbsp whole wheat flour, and cinnamon & mix together.

4. Add the sliced apples into the bowl. Toss to combine. In a lightly greased 9x13 dish, pour the apples into the dish and arrange flat. Pour ¼ cup water over the apples.

5. In a small bowl, add the oats, ½ cup whole wheat flour, brown sugar or coconut sugar, baking powder, and baking soda, mix to combine.

6. Add the melted butter or earth balance and mix with a fork until crumbs begin to form. Sprinkle over the apples in the baking dish and bake until the top is golden-brown- roughly 35-40 minutes.

7. Roll out top crust dough while the apples are baking- Form a large rectangle using a rolling pin and cut out four circles the size of the skillets. Cut the circles into thin strips (about ¼ inch) and set aside.

8. Halfway through baking the apples, carefully scoop out the apple mixture and place into small skillets. Weave the small strips of dough delicately over the apple crisp and continue to bake for the last half of baking. Brush with butter for an extra golden brown & delicious touch! Enjoy :)

Tips/Tricks:

- You can easily make this recipe with any kind of fruit you have on hand- just remember the more moisture the fruit has, the more oats/flour I would add.

- You can also make miniature pie crusts instead of weaving the dough over the top if you’d like to speed up the pastry process :)
